Is overpopulation real? Is Earth filling up with too many humans? How many people can Earth hold, anyway? As our species approaches 8 billion, human overpopulation is a major concern for many people. How can we reduce poverty and our impact on the environment? Do we need a forced one-child policy or something? Maybe not, because when we look at the science and history, populations seem to control themselves. This week we look at all these questions and more.

CommUNITY is the solution to homelessness | Angela Belford | TEDxDicksonStreet

Homelessness is a solvable social problem, but it will take the entire community getting on board. From dispelling myths about causes of homelessness to sharing how she overcame her own time being homeless and housing insecure, Angela shares practical tips that anyone can use in their efforts to eliminate homelessness in their community. From a childhood of homelessness and food insecurity to becoming a champion of community investors, Angela Belford is charting a new path for people experiencing homelessness in Northwest Arkansas.

Like many of us, Angela Belford didn’t start out on a straight and narrow journey to success. By the time she graduated from high school, Angela had lived with 4 families, made countless address changes, and attended over a dozen schools. She even experienced a season of homelessness after the passing of her adopted mother. Yet over time, Angela changed her trajectory in life.

In addition to owning a successful Fayetteville based software development and digital marketing company, The Belford Group, Angela has passionately become our community’s homelessness ambassador. She is currently the chairwoman of a local board working on a strategic plan to end homelessness in Northwest Arkansas by 2025. Her new book, Be Freaking Awesome debuts in Sept 2017 with more about her story. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Poaching Elephants: Saving Wildlife by Saving People | Kevin Frech | TEDxBeaconStreet

Why do poachers poach? The was the question that lead film maker and documentarian Kevin Frech to go to Africa. What he found are the real reasons: lack of income, lack of education, lack of opportunity, and options so limited that poaching elephants was desperate action to achieve basic sustenance and basic family support. Poverty and Interventions: A Case for Northern Nigeria | Hafsat Dange | TEDxArkilla

Upon visiting a women training center in her community, Lawyer and Entrepreneur Hafsat Dange began to re-imagine a future in Northern Nigeria where women won’t be subjected to the worst of working conditions only to be negligible contributors to the economy. Hafsat challenges individuals, groups and governments to take action against poverty without waiting for messiahs from outside. Hafsat is a corporate lawyer, social entrepreneur and advocate for women’s rights and economic development. She currently heads the Sokoto State branch of Nigeria’s Corporate Affairs Commission.

Through her NGO, Association of Northern Women Entrepreneurs (ANWE), she strives to ensure women’s participation in economic development as the country stabilises from the economic recession. She is a Mandela Washington Fellow and continues to create opportunities for women and girls of Northern Nigeria. Why We Must Join Others in Eradicating Poverty | Lydia Hunt | TEDxYouth@ISF

We see it all the time in newspapers, on television and all around us: the effects of poverty on human lives. Most people would immediately rush to action if they saw a dying child living in horrible conditions right in front of them, yet many don’t when it comes to donating money for the unfortunate who live far away. Lydia says that there are much simpler ways of combating poverty from far away, and shows us how to get involved right now.

Lydia attends Headington School in Oxford, UK. She is a drama scholar, thoroughly enjoys musical theatre and she plays the harp. She is currently studying drama, psychology, philosophy, and photography at A-level. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
